ANNOUNCEMENT OF DRR 2010/2011

As DRR Michael is away on biz, it is my pleasure to announce that the DRR for 2010-2011 is - ZR Toh Chun Keong of RAC Singapore East.

CK (as he is affectionately called) is the current ZR for Singapore (Zone 3) and his primary motivation & objective in taking on this office is to try to rectify the lethargy and lack of interest in Rotaract in the district (especially in the community-based clubs). His vision is to make Rotaract interesting, meaningful & useful to Rotaractors in D3310 - to revive Rotaract to the good old days when Rotaract events like Dist Assemblies, Dist Conferences were "sold out" events months ahead. When Zonal Meetings were always full house and "standing room only" and Rotaract events saw entire clubs turning up !!!

Please join me in congratulating CK for his leadership, courage, passion & belief in Rotaract. Let's give him our fullest support. Dear fellow Rotaractors of District 3310,

I am pleased to announce that the nominations for DRR10/11 are open. I would like to invite Rotaractors who are interested to serve the District on a higher level to apply.

Below is the list of criteria required for the positionof DRRE, with reference to the past nominations and election of DRRE, as listed in the MOP. Kindly read through and understand the requirements before applying.

I hope that clubs will take care in choosing the nominees and vote wisely once it is open.

1. DRRE election time-line :

Closing Date for nominations - 15th Feb 2010

(Kindly email form, nomination AND supporting letter to drr3310@gmail.com )
- Forms can be obtained through your Zonal Representatives

- Circulation of eligible CVs to all Presidents/Secretaries for voting by all clubs

In the event of a walk-over due to only one nomination,there will be no balloting.

2. Selection of DRR-elect through Ballot-by-Mail Procedure
ONE vote per club. Members of the club have to unanimously agree on the same candidate.

3. Qualifications and criteria of DRR-Elect

* Must have served 1 full term as club president of a Rotaract club (to have some proven experience running a club). This does not include District Board membership as a qualifying criteria since running a project or some projects is different from running a club.

* Be a member in a functioning club in good standing that has no outstanding indebtedness to District.

* Be younger than 29 years old as of 1st July, sothat he/she is not older than 30 years old when taking over as DRR and therefore can serve as IPDRR no later than age 31.

* Should have been nominated by his/her home club (as a sign of support) as well as other club from another zone (to get support from the other parts of the district).

* Demonstrate willingness, commitment, and ability to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the office of DRR.

* Must demonstrate knowledge of the qualifications, duties,and responsibilities of DRR.

4. Attributes of DRR- Elect
A DRR, at the time of taking office, must have completed 2 years of membership in one or more clubs and have actively attended the District Rotaract Assemblies and Conferences. DRR also should:

* Possess the esteem and confidence of his/her own club.

* Be a high business or professional standing, with executive ability demonstrated in the conduct of their businesses and professions.

* Have their business or professional work well organized that they can give the time necessary to carry out Rotaract work.

* Have a thorough knowledge of Rotaract, its purposes, object,and constitutional documents.

* Be able to discuss any phase of Rotaract in a convincing manner and convey information articulately.

5. Duties of DRRE during the year preceding taking office as DRR

* Be given specific responsibilities by the DRR in connectionwith district committees or district organisation.

* Be invited by DRR to attend as an observer all district meetings.

* Be considered by DRR for assignment to participate inthe program of the district conference and assembly.

FOUNDATION OF ROTARY CLUBS IN SINGAPORE FLAG DAY

ROTARACTORS NEEDED FOR FOUNDATION OF ROTARY CLUBS IN SINGAPORE FLAG DAY

Date: Sat 27^th March 2010

Volunteers needed: a few hundred volunteers

Target: to raise $100K

The Foundation of Rotary Clubs (S) Ltd has been allocated a Flag Day by the National Council of Social Services on Saturday, 27^th March 2010.

This is only the third time for the Foundation to raise funds through a Flag Day. They hope to raise $100,000 to defray the expenses incurred by the community projects under the Foundation of Rotary Clubs (S) Ltd - the Rotary Family Service Centre and Ayer Rajah Students’ Care Centre. Annually, the Foundation incurs almost a million dollars for these community projects. Despite government subsidy, we rely heavily on public donations to keep on doing the good work.

All Rotaractors in Singapore (both tertiary & community-based) are strongly urged to render your support and assistance in this Flag Day – as a “Family of Rotary”.

Advanced RYLA

Advanced RYLA (A-RYLA) is a "proto-type". At the moment, there is a group in the States that is experimenting a similar program.

A-RYLA is program by youth for youth. Unlike RYLA where Rotarians organised everything, including conducting course content, A-RYLA encourages graduates of past RYLAs to organise and facilitate sessions as follow up to their breakthroughs from previous RYLA Camps.

In other words, A-RYLA is about them (the youth), with them organising program they want for themselves. Rotarians act only as mentors and resource facilitators.

APRRC 2009

Several Rotary Clubs have informed me that they will be sponsoring their Rotaractors for APRRC 2009 (22-25 Nov 2009).

I wish to remind all Rotaract Clubs which are getting this sponsorship from their Rotary Clubs for this Rotaract mega event that they are required to utilise the full sum of the sponsorship /subsidy strictly for this APRRC 2009 conference only. No portion from this sponsorship/subsidy is to kept by the club or channeled for other purposes.

Based on the input from various Rotaractors, the organizing committee has decided to create a special “TRANSFERABLE DAY PASS” which can be used without restriction by any Rotaractor from the same club throughout the event.

This Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference is indeed a rare and wonderful opportunity for Rotaractors in our district to experience the truly international aspect of Rotaract - beyond their club or even district level.

To date, more than 400 Rotaractors have registered from over 20 countries including Australia, China, France, Germany, Guam, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, UAE & the USA.

The organizing committee has been working very hard to bring this prestigious Rotaract mega event since they won the right to host this conference in Singapore when they bidded for it in Bali last year.

The theme for this 3-Day Conference is LEARN,GROW,SERVE and special emphasis has been placed on the exciting mix of international fellowship, community service and professional development with ample opportunities for socializing and making new friends. As they say in Rotaract – ”There are no strangers in Rotaract, only friends whom you have not met !!!”

Celebrate vocational service in October

Throughout October, Vocational Service Month, Interactors, Rotaractors, and RYLA participants are encouraged to initiate vocational service activities. Vocational service entails promoting the highest ethical standards in all occupations, recognizing the worthiness of all useful occupations, and contributing your vocational talents to meeting your community's needs.

During this month, consider performing one or more of the following activities:

Present on vocational service at your next Interact or Rotaract club meeting.
Recognize someone in the community who exemplifies outstanding professional achievement while maintaining high ethical standards.
Hold a career fair or vocational training workshop during your next RYLA event, and invite local professionals to give presentations on their career paths.
Develop a mentoring program between Rotarians and youth program participants.
Learn more about Rotary's involvement in vocational service.

Celebrate World Interact Week, 2-8 November

Join Interactors around the world 2-8 November to celebrate World Interact Week 2009. Every year, Interact clubs and their sponsor Rotary clubs are encouraged to celebrate the founding of the first Interact club on 5 November 1962 by participating in joint projects.

Get recognition for your club's activities by submitting the World Interact Week Celebration Recognition Entry Form to RI by 15 December.

Register for Rotary-UN Day

On 7 November, about 1,500 people, including Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, and United Nations leaders, will attend Rotary-UN Day in New York City.

Organized by RI representatives to the UN, the day will feature panel discussions on water, literacy, health, and youth. Speakers from the United Nations, Rotary, and other nongovernmental organizations will discuss humanitarian programs and provide insight into the more than 60-year relationship between Rotary and the UN.

The program will also include a youth panel featuring a speaker from Interact and Rotaract, who will each present a 10-minute description of a hands-on international club project.

September is New Generations Month

A good time to renew, reinforce & rejoice the relationship with your sponsoring Rotary club.

Attend their club meeting and do a short presentation on your recent projects and Year Plan perhaps would be a great idea. Join their project (if any). Go bowling or a game of golf with your Rotarians. Invite your Rotarians to your club meeting or event. Organise a BBQ for socializing and fellowship with your Rotarians.

For those who attended the Rotaract District Assembly, have you submitted your Year Plan and Budget to your sponsoring Rotary Club yet? This would be an opportune time to do so.

Don’t forget to include your budget request for their kind sponsorship for the 2 key Rotaract events i.e. the Rotaract District Assembly & the Rotaract District Conference (which will be held in conjunction with the largest Rotaract event in Singapore this year – the Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference (APRRC 2009).

A Very Warm Welcome from DRR Michael Choy

Dear all Rotaractors of District 3310,

A very Happy New Rotary/Rotaract Year to all of you! I'm sure you are excited about the new year of 2009/2010 as we embark on a new Rotaract journey of learning and service. This year's theme is "Learn, Grow, Serve", which we shall focus on improving ourselves professional and personally so that we can better serve our community.

We also see the milestone for District 3310 as we successfully bidded for the Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference in Bali last year. It is going to be an exciting experience in November 2009 with Rotaractors from over 16 different countries coming together in Singapore to enjoy a time of fellowship, learning, cultural exchange and international understanding. I urge all Rotaractors in the District to take part in this first-ever Multi-District event, either as a participant or part of the organising committee. It is a chance not to be missed!

Amidst the economy downturn and the impending H1N1 flu situation, let us not forget as Rotaractors to continue to serve and lend a hand to the less fortunate. As the Rotary theme for the year is "The Future of Rotary Is In Your Hands", I strongly believe one of the aspects of the future of Rotary is us Rotaractors.

Taking on the role of a leader in the club is a challenging task indeed, but with proper training and guidance, I believe we can all excel and become the leaders of tomorrow. The upcoming Rotaract District Assembly is a mandatory event for all Board of Directors to acquire the skills and knowledge to better serve the club. It will be held in Ngee Ann Polytechnic on 1st August 2009. For those in Zone 2 and 4 who are saving up for APRRC, fret not as the District Team will organise Zonal level Assemblies to cater for decentralised training.

Meanwhile, let me present to you the District Team of the year 2009/2010. This year's structure differs from past years as we adopt a structure similar to the Rotary's District Leadership Plan structure, seperating Club Service into Membership Development, Public Relations and Administration (run by the Zonal Representatives). Thus we focus more on membership recruitment and retention, as well as raising Rotaract's profile to the public. At the same time, all other service avenues will fall under Service Projects (community service, international service, professional development).

SEVERAL boys, upon completion of their secondary school education, approached me in 1965, to help them with their dream of continuing as "Interactors" or school-level Rotary Club members.

The boys had enjoyed their roles as Interactors so much while studying at SM Saint Joseph that they wanted to continue their involvement in the Rotary Club and give back something to the community.

The Rotary Club is open to professionals or businessmen above 30 years old but teenagers could still participate if they are between Forms Three and Six.

At the time the boys approached me, there was no avenue in which young adults below 30 and who had finished their secondary education could get involved in the Rotary Club. They either had to be above 30 or in a good paying job.

That was what prompted me to form what is known today as the Rotaract Club. So I set about strengthening the existing network between Interactors and Rotarians.

The Interactors needed insight into what community service was all about outside their school life.

The Interact Club of Saint Joseph School was the first of its kind in Southeast Asia in 1962 and was part of the Johor Baru 330 Rotary Club.

So I wrote to Rotary Club International, based in Illinois, the US, with a proposal to form a club for school leavers who were keen to continue working for the community.

After a year, it consented to my proposal to form Rotaract Club, which is a combination of “Rotary” and “Interact”, and the first Rotaract Club in Asia was born in 1963.

Since then, many Rotaract Clubs have been formed worldwide.

1) Youth beteween the age of 25 to 40 years old;

2) Be professionally employed for at least two years;

3) No blood relation to any Rotarians;

4) Must be sponsored by a Rotary Club in the District.

This is Vocational Tour whereby team members are given the opportunity to experience their vocation in another part of the world, in this instance - England. Team members will be attached to their respective vocation in the suitable industry in England and also experience Home Stay and Hospitality of Rotarians in that country.

Most of all, Team members are our District Ambassadors of Goodwill as well as Ambassadors from our respective country.

This is an all paid Study Tour of approximately 4 to 5 weeks. For those who require a written message from the District to apply for leave from your employers, arrangements could be made for District Governor-elect Datuk Hj Md. Latip Sarrugi (who will then be the District Governor) to provide such a letter to your employers.

MINISTER Mentor Lee Kuan Yew was honoured last night by one of the world's largest and oldest philanthropic organisations, Rotary International, which gave him a rare award.

He received the Rotary International Award Of Honour, in recognition of his 'long and visionary leadership in Singapore and in the international community'.

Reading the citation before presenting the award at a gala dinner at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Rotary International president Lee Dong-kurn of South Korea described it as a 'small token of the great respect that you have earned for your many achievements'.

He also noted that MM Lee's 'grasp of global politics has made you a great statesman'.

'Your achievements, global outlook and vision complement the Mission and Objectives of Rotary International.'

Accepting the award, MM Lee, 85, thanked the Rotary International president.

MM Lee said voluntary welfare organisations like Rotary International that help the less fortunate, are better alternatives for society than relying too much on state-funded welfarism.

Hunt 4 Fun+D
The Hunt4Fun+D is a charity walk hunt to raise funds for the Differently Able Children and Old Folks Home in Alor Gajah. This activity involves teams of 4 participants hunting through some of the famous historical sites in Melaka to solve the puzzles given to them. Entry fees are RM100 per team and the fees will be channelled directly to the home. The 1st Prize is RM500 for the winning team, up for grabs and free lunch will be sponsored by The Friends Cafe. So,is time to let go your work, come to Melaka to join us forthis meaningful event.Closing dates for entry in 14 Feb.

Anniversary Dinner: Swing!

Lend a helping hand to the Kanaq community!

Hi Folkz,

The Kanaq community is the smallest tribe among all the Orang Asli's in Malaysia (23 families living there) and the most neglected thus, most in need of assistance. Even the Malaysian Orang Asli Affairs officer said that they are probably on the brink of extinction as a tribe. For more information on the Kanaq community, please refer to this flier.

We have traditionally been going to this village each year to donate much needed household groceries to the families there during Hari Raya or Chinese New Year. Jimmy & myself were there just last week to check things out and sad to say, things remain pretty much the same for these people. They are still living below the poverty line. So, we thought it would be the right time for us to organise this Community Outreach. The plan is to convoy our way there on that day. We'll stop by Giant megamart on the way to buy the groceries to be donated as it's much cheaper in Johor. We usually we go via Woodlands (lower toll charges). Please do join us in this humanitarian assistance project if you can...

What's needed on that day:
1. Drivers who are willing to drive their cars in (convoy style) as we need your bootspace to bring the groceries from the megamart to the village. We also hope to save some cost if you are kind enough to ferry some people in your car so that we won't need to hire a private bus to get there as it is quite expensive and we'd rather use that money to buy groceries for the villagers.
2. Used clothes (but in good condition please) As you can see from the photos in the flier - adult clothes, children's clothes, men clothes, women's clothes - all will be useful items that they need.

3. Used shoes & slippers

4. Used toys - optional but not an essential need. And no sweets or chocolates please...

Hunt 4 Fun-D is a charity treasure hunt RACKM is organising to raise funds for Differently Able Children and Old Folks Centre, Alor Gajah, Melaka. This centre is 10 months old with 9 inmates and 3 permanent caretakers. With monthly cost of RM4400 needed to run this centre, there is a pressure need to support this centre.

Being a charter member of the Rotaract Club of Raffles City, PP Michael Choy has held many important positions like President of his club ('02/03), Zonal Representative for Zone 3 ('04/05) and District Club Service Chair ('05/06). Having participated actively in many Zonal and District events, PP Michael Choy has developed lasting friendships both locally and internationally. This has contributed towards his deep passion towards the ideals of Rotaract and the strong desire to share this experience with other Rotaractors.

As the DRR of district 3310, he hopes to increase public awareness of Rotaract and raise its profile. Please inform anyone who has AB blood type of bone marrow so that they can have the opportunity to find the 'right person' to help. To the family members of the leukaemia (blood cancer) patient, every second counts. They anxiously need an AB blood type of person to donate his/her bone marrow, and although there may be very little chance of getting a match, but at least it gives them hope. Because of your loving kindness to pass the message along, she may stand a chance to recover. So, please put a little effort, the little girl may have chance to live because of you. I am pleased to announce that the nominations for DRR09/10, will be beginning on 15th October 2008. I would like to invite Rotaractors who are interested to serve the District on a higher level to apply.

Below is the list of criteria required for the positionof DRRE, with reference to the past nominations and election of DRRE, aslisted in the MOP. Kindly read through and understand the requirements before applying.

I hope that clubs will take care in choosing the nominees and vote wisely once it is open.

1. DRRE election time-line :
Closing Date for nominations - 15th Nov2008
(Kindly email form , nomination AND supporting letter to district3310@gmail.com )
- Circulation of eligible CVs to all Presidents/Secretariesfor voting by all clubs
In the event of a walk-over due to only one nomination,there will be no balloting.

2. Selection of DRR-elect through Ballot-by-Mail Procedure ONE vote per club. Members of the club have tounanimously agree on the same candidate.

3. Qualifications and criteria of DRR-Elect
* Must have served 1 full term as club presidentof a Rotaract club (to have some proven experience running a club). This does not include District Board membership as a qualifying criteriasince running a project or some projects is different from running a club.
* Be a member in afunctioning club in good standingthat has no outstanding indebtedness to District.
* Beyounger than 29 years old as of 1st July, sothat he/she is not older than 30 years old when taking over as DRR andtherefore can serve as IPDRR no later than age 31.
* Should have been nominated by his/her home club (as a sign of support) as well as other club from another zone (toget support from the other parts of the district).
* Demonstrate willingness, commitment, and ability to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the officeof DRR.
* Must demonstrate knowledge of the qualifications, duties,and responsibilities of DRR.

4. Attributes of DRR- Elect A DRR, at the time of taking office, must have completed2 years of membership in one or more clubs and have actively attended theDistrict Rotaract Assemblies and Conferences. DRR also should:
* Possess the esteem and confidence of his/her own club.
* Be a high business or professional standing, with executiveability demonstrated in the conduct of their businesses and professions.
* Have their business or professional work well organizedthat they can give the time necessary to carry out Rotaract work.
* Have a thorough knowledge of Rotaract, its purposes, object,and constitutional documents.
* Be able to discuss any phase of Rotaract in a convincingmanner and convey information articulately.

5. Duties of DRRE during the year preceding takingoffice as DRR
* Be given specific responsibilities by the DRR in connectionwith district committees or district organisation.
* Be invited by DRR to attend as an observer all districtmeetings.
* Be considered by DRR for assignment to participate inthe program of the district conference and assembly.

Greetings from Rotary International!

As you know, the International RYLA is an annual event where young adults convene and participate in a program that focuses on advanced leadership techniques, peace and conflict resolution, and other international issues of interest. Aside from the group discussions and training exercises, attendees will be able to meet and network on an international level with other exceptional young leaders from across the world.

The 2009 International RYLA will be held near Birmingham, England from 18-21 June 2009. While the schedule or program for the event has not yet been finalized, we do have a guide document that I would like to share with you containing some information on the event in general.

Applications are being considered for both participants and counselors at this time:

Youth Participants: applications are open to all individuals between the ages of 18 to 30 who are not Rotarians, but who have participated in any Rotary youth or educational program. This includes previous experience with Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Exchange, RYLA, Ambassadorial Scholarships, Group Study Exchange, the Peace and Conflict Studies program, and the World Peace Fellowship. For your convenience, I have attached the youth participant application form to this email.
Counselors: applications will be considered from Rotarian and past International RYLA alumni that have extensive experience with the RYLA program, such as organizing RYLAs at their local district level.

Please note that the deadline for all applications is 15 December 2008. I would recommend that any interested candidates submit an application (see attached), with all required signatures, as soon as possible to our offices. Rotaract District Assembly 2008 took place over the weekend on 12th and 13th July 2008 in NTU, Singapore. It was jointly organized by the Rotaract Club of NTU and the Rotaract Club of North West and it was definitely a job well done! If you weren’t there with us, here’s what you missed…

INVITATION TO EXPERIENCE A EUROPEAN LIFESTYLE

Young business and professional men and women are invited to participate in the Group Study Exchange(GSE) team of Rotary International District 3310.

The GSE team, comprising of one senior Rotarian leader and four non-Rotarians, will be hosted by District 1470 of Denmark, for a period of five weeks, from August 31 – Oct 5, 2008.

The applicants should be currently employed with two years of experience in their chosen professions and between the ages of 25-40. The team will experience the host country’s institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships and exchange ideas with their peers abroad.

They will be immersed in cultural experiences, enjoy fellowship with host families and members of the community and work with the host district’s Rotarians at club meetings and various Rotary activities..

The GSE will be funded by the World Fund GSE Award of The Rotary Foundation.

The World Fund Award covers transportation for the team’s travel from District 3310 to District 1470. The hosting District 1470 will be responsible for covering the cost of meals and lodging for the team(usually through Rotarian host families) and logistics within the district.

PROJECT PRESERVE PLANET EARTH CAMP

As you know the earth is in bad shape, so no matter how small the effort is, it still plays a big part of making our world a better place.

Some Rotaract clubs had make the effort to visit the natural reserves to learn and appreciate our mother nature.

Now lets take one more steps to do more for planet earth, the only place we can really call home.

PROJECT PRESERVE PLANET EARTH CAMP- TEBRAU RIVER CLEAN UP AND REFORESTATION CORRIDOR& YOUTH EXCHANGE CAMP (SAT 10 MAY 08)

Through Preserve Planet Earth, we are encouraged to live environmentally conscious lifestyles, to increase the number and diversity of environmental service projects, and to promote greater
awareness among all of the critical environmental issues affecting our communities and the planet.

Recognizing the need to address the growing environmental crisis, Rotary International launched its Preserve Planet Earth (PPE) focus in 1990. Many Rotary clubs are helping solve environmental problems by reforesting, establishing animal sanctuaries, reducing toxic waste, sponsoring educational activities, and promoting ecological practices.

To foster concern for the global environment and sustainable development that promotes economic and social progress in alleviating poverty and preserving the environment for future generations, Rotary International District 3310 Youth Exchange Programme (YEP) Committee is collaborating with the Johore Bahru City Council and Iskandar Development Region in a youth exchange camp involving a river clean up and reforestation project along the Tebrau River Corridor in Johor Bahru on Saturday 10 May 2008.

The main objective of this project is to promote understanding and friendship between youth from Malaysia and Singapore through fostering awareness and concern for the environment. Teams of Singaporean and Malaysian youth will work together in carrying out the project.
Interactors and youth volunteers from Johore, Malacca and Singapore are invited to participate in this service project that will also be educational for all. The organizing task force includes Rotarians, Johor Bahru City Council and Iskandar Development Region, and will also be closely supported by schools, police and army personnel, first aid units and local village residents. The project will be launched by the Johore Chief Minister and and other dignitaries. The youth team shall be led by Ms Jessica Tan, Miss Singapore Universe who is also our Rotary Youth Ambassador and Ms Adelaine Chin, Miss
Malaysia Universe.

It was 40 years ago this month that the first Rotaract club was chartered. During World Rotaract Week, 10-16 March, Rotaractors and their Rotarian sponsors can conduct joint activities and be recognized by RI President Wilf Wilkinson.

Need inspiration? Here are a few recent projects carried out by Rotaractors around the world:

The Rotaract Club of Berkeley , California , USA , hosts an annual “bone marrow-thon” registration for potential bone marrow donors, in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Berkeley. Every year, hundreds of UC-Berkeley students register by providing a cheek swab.

Rotaractors in Alexandria , Egypt , started the Beautiful Minds project to provide income-generating materials to 28 underprivileged families with mentally challenged children. They’re also working to raise awareness of mental disabilities in the community.

The Rotaract Club of Chicago partnered with the Rotaract Club of Panama to provide the village of Bajo Bonito with a 3,000-gallon water tank and service connections to village households. The Chicago Rotaractors traveled to Panama to work with local Rotaractors on the project.

For the last three years, Rotaractors at the University of New South Wales , Australia , have traveled to different locales in Asia and the Pacific to build Habitat for Humanity homes.

Each year, the week of March 13 marks World Rotaract Week in commemoration of the first official chartering of a Rotaract Club on March 13, 1968.

As 2008 marks the 40th Anniversary of Rotaract, Rotaractors are encouraged to plan something *extra special* to celebrate!

We should work out something to commemorate this 40th year of Rotaract!
Let's start the work out by joining the following event.

It's a special week to sweat it all out for Rotaract!

The expedition to Chek Jawa! Chek Jawa is a rare piece of relatively unspoiled marine habitat that everyone should experience before it gets destroyed by greedy developers wanting to build the next IR. Basically what we are going to see is the tidal flats or exposed beach but with much more marine life. Therefore the best time to see it is when the tide is lowest.

Things to do: cycle, chase wild boars, eat seafood..... Bring your ageing grandparents, lactating primates or cute single friends everyone is welcome. Please refer to below for the dirty details:

Rotaract Dist Conference - 18-20th @ KK (SABAH)

This year we have our very first Rotaract District Conference which is held at Beringgis Beach Resort, Kota Kinabulu, East Malaysia from 18 Jan to 20 Jan.

First day –

Upon our arrival at KKIA terminal 2, we were greeted by the hosting club, Rotaract Club of Likas Bay. After which, we were drove to a nearby eating place to try one of the sabah’s popular dish called the Kan Lau mee (pork chop).

We arrived at Beringgis Beach Resort. This is the registration counter with our DRC PP John Ng.

Soon, the opening ceremony commenced with the hit of the bell by DRR Lina to start the conference. DRR Lina shares on how she was ask to take over DRR earlier on a comfortable weekday’s afternoon. Next, we have our DRRE PP Wee to talk on his GSE trip in Holland.

We are assigned to our allocate teams: North, East, South, West. We played various team games after the speech. Team games include caterpillar walk, longest line, passing water bomb, treasure hunt, throw dice to walk, gunny sack race etc.

Dinner was held at Kingfisher hall and we have a splendid buffet spread. It was indeed “seeing is believing”. The food was simply sumptuous and satisfying.

On the following night, we celebrated the birth of a new club call the SBC, in short for stomach bigger than chest which was founded by Rtr Min jun and Sponsor by DRC PP John.

On the second day of the conference, we received numerous guests, including the Rotarians and our guest-of-honour, Our guest-of-honour, PDG Datuk George is the first DG to come from Sabah and we are greatly honoured to have him as our guest. After the usual rounds of toasting and roll call, PDG Datuk George had kindly shared with us his 21 ways to live a better life. He also explained to us the relationship between the president, the government, the working class, the people and the future.

Following that, Deputy DRC PP Victor, who gave a panel talk on “5Cs in Life”, which is of course not the 5Cs we talk about in Singapore. It comprises of “Character, Conflict Resolution, Career Development, Community Service and Continuity”. He also addressed the conflicting issues arising from the Rotarians-Rotaractors relationship, the recruitment of young Rotarians progressing from Rotaractors and the contributions made by Rotarians to their own Rotaractors.

Our next speaker, PP Li is a renowned image trainer in Sabah with many years of experience. She shared with us on the benefits and the ways of achieving “win-win” situations. Therefore, we are able to benefit greatly from the session in knowing how to create a “win-win” situation from the problems we faced and what can be gain through mutual cooperation. It was truly an enlightening and informative conference.

Last but not least, we had PP Hiew to give a talk on Leader’s Mindset and shared with us the success stories of various founders of famous brand like Honda, IBM, coca cola etc. He elaborated on how Honda started with a mere 500 USD but had grown to become a multi-billion dollar industry and how coca cola recipe was sold originally for 2300 USD but was worth a colossal amount now. The success stories he told greatly inspired and motivate us. However, to be a leader, we have to possess certain attributes. As such, he touched on the qualities and the kind of mindset that a leader should have to truly become a successful leader.

The theme for the dinner was “Pirates Night on the Beach”. We have Rotaractors and Rotarians dressed up as Pirates with the best-looking Pirate winning the “best-dressed Pirate” for the night. It was a highly enjoyable and light-hearted event as we get to let our hair down and be our wacky selves.

Third Day –

Times flies really fast and before we knew it, it was the third day. Most of us were really glad to have made new friends during the conference and it was with a tinge of regret that our wonderful time together was going to end soon.

Rotaract movement have been active in our District for more than 30 years, ever wonder what is the life as a Rotaractor back then?

Rotaract District Assembly 2007

District Governor Chris Chen was the Guest of Honour at the Rotaract District Assembly being held on 28th-29th July 2007. It was jointly organized by District Team 07/08 and Rotaract Club of Republic Polytechnic.
This year Rotaract District Assembly was totally unique and set a history in our District. For the first time, our trainers were all rotaractors; we had 24 Rotaractors from Zone 1, Zone 2 and Zone 4 who flew all the way down to attend; Republic Polytechnic Lion Dance Club to welcome Guest of Honour and District Chris Chen and to kick start the event; we had a total of 129 participants who took part; there were three Rotary Program as part of our Plenary Sessions.

We will be training a pool of Rotaractors to be trainers for future assemblies and conferences.

Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference 2007

A’Famosa, Melaka (25th Aug – 28th Aug 2007)

The 4th APRRC was commenced in Melaka which is known as the historical state in Malaysia. APRRC is an event to promote International Understanding and sharing of ideas between the rotaractors of Asia Pacific. It was the first time for many of the 32 delegates of RID3310 to attend APRRC and the anticipation and excitement could be felt in the flood of emails sent prior to the event.

24^th Aug

Many of the delegates arrived a day earlier to go sightseeing. It was a fine day as we felt the cool breeze brushing thru us. The first thing in sight was the beautiful golf course and not to mention the high-rise condominium we are going to stay for our rest of the conference.

25th Aug

We started the day by having sumptous breakfast at the cowboy town in A’famosa resort. The morning crowd was amazing at the dining hall; we were delighted and excited to see fellow delegates from various districts.

After breakfast, we proceeded to the ballroom to witness the opening ceremony. There were roll calls so as to recognize the various districts. National anthem for both Philippines (Year 2006 Organizer) and Malaysia (Year 2007 Organizer) were also sung during the ceremony. DRR Lina was invited up on the stage to be recognised as the co-organiser for the current APPRC.

Soon after the ceremony ended, we headed off to prepare for the Rotaract Festival, district 3310 fellow delegates brought along some brochures to showcase about the countries which consisted mainly information of Malaysia and Singapore, some went to the effort to bring pepper sweets, traditional costume, craft work and food like rojak and roti prata which was appreciated by a lot of fellow delegates! We also had a chance to visit other district booths and do cultural exchange. We managed to try a lot of delicious local delights and not forgetting other countries local delights. Its so yummy.. For instances, Philippines - snack, Taiwan – calligraphy, Malaysia – Chicken rice ball and many more…

After the Rotaract Festival, we have to accomplish another mission at night. We were required to perform a cultural dance. We were arranged to be under group 8. With limited time to practice, we managed to pull thru the performance. To our delight, our dance performance was a great success. Our performance involved 3 skits, the 1^st part is a (Orang- kenya) normal cultural slow dance led by Rtr La-ong, 2^nd part was led by DRR Lina and 3^rd part was a fashion show which showcase a series of different traditional culture costumes in

Malaysia

directed by PP Wee from RAC Kota Melaka.

26^th Aug

We attended the Plenary Session. The session included topics such as moving towards MDIO, Rotary and Rotaract under the microscope. It was really an eye opener for many new rotaract members to attend the plenary session.

27^th Aug

As part of the programme, DRR Lina was invited to speak and present the country report.

After lunch, the first programme is promoting about the Interota, Seoul 2008, next is the sister pact agreement where all the DRRs were called upon to the stage and signed the agreement. Lastly, showcasing a video clip on Indonesia as they will be the organizer for APPRC 2009 and the bell was handled to them.

28^th Aug

We bid farewell to the fellow delegates and left the place with no regrets.

The happy memories embraced all of us.

For many of us, it was our first APRRC and it will never end here! It was an enriching experience that served to strengthen our passion for rotaract.

GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE TEAM TO OHIO UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

I have been informed by District Governor Chris Chen that the Group Study Exchange Team from our District 3310 is scheduled to leave for this trip to Ohio, United States of America from 16th April to 21st May 2008.
Ever since last Rotary Year 2006 – 2007 the District GSE selection committee is incline to support the application by Rotaractors of good standing in our District.

This is a VOCATIONAL AND STUDY Tour for young working professional adults of at least 25 years old to 40 years old. This all expense paid (inclusive of airfare to and from Ohio, USA, local transportation and home stay) is being sponsored by Rotary International Foundation. Candidates (Rotaractors) who aspire to be considered as member of this team (which comprises of 4 team, members and a Rotarian Team leader) should prepare themselves with the following check list:-

Able to take leave from your office from 16th April to 21st May 2008;
Able to take time off at least 4 to 6 weeks prior to this tour for the purpose of preparation to promote the District and the countries which form this District 3310, i.e. Singapore, Malaysia & Brunei;
Have a comprehensive knowledge of the Culture, Language, Historical Information and any other tourist promotional information of the 3 countries mentioned;
Is an active Rotaractor in your respective Rotaract Club as well as the District Rotaract Team;
Speaks fluent English and any other languages spoken in our District
Be independent when in an overseas environment with good health
Be able to tell the selection committee the reasons you are applying for this GSE Vocational Tour, What do you hope to get out of this tour;
How and what role would you play on returning.

Remember, as member of this GSE Team, you who are chosen, have an important role to play as an Ambassador of Rotary in our District and the country you represent.

Before you submit your application, please ensure that you obtain the consent and support of your employers to be away from your job for some 5 to 6 weeks as well as the period you will be away from your office during the preparation time.

Lastly, you will require the consent from the President of your sponsoring Rotary Club.

The criteria listed below are with reference to past criteria for the nomination and election of DRRE, as listed in the MOP.

3. Qualifications and criteria of DRR-Elect
Must have served 1 full term as club president of a Rotaract club (to have some proven experience running a club), this does not include using District Board membership as a qualifying criteria as running a project or some projects is different from running a club

Be a member in a functioning club in good standing that has no outstanding indebtedness to District
Be younger than 29 years old as of 1 July, so that he/she is not older than 30 years old when taking over as DRR and therefore can serve as IPDRR no later than age 31
Should have been nominated by his/her home club (as a sign of support) as well as other club from another zone (to get support from the other parts of the district)

RYLA 2007 ( Malacca, Johor and Singapore) will be held on 29th November to 2nd December 2007, it will be held at Tanjung Sutera Resort, Sedili Besar, Kota Tinggi. It is organized by Rotary Club of Johor Centennial, Rotary E-Club 3310 and Rotary Club of Kota Tinggi.
RYLA 2007 focus on 3 main Areas: CAT (C) - Cultural and Friendship Exchange, (A) Adventures an (T) Training through Community Services.

Gentle Reminder on Zonal Meeting

Dear DRC PP John Ng, DRR PP Lina Chin, IPDRR PP Md. Zakir, District Team 07/08, Rotaract Leaders, Fellow Rotaractors & Friends,

Firstly a big thank you to all of you for the strong support during the week when my grandpa passed away. I am touched by the warm Rotaract spirit all of you extended to me at a difficult period to me as well as my family members. Especially DRC PP John Ng & several kind Rotaractors who came down personally to the wake and encouraged me to be strong. Our DRR Lina & other fellow Rtrs' encouragements over smses, emails and phones to be strong. It is not easy coping with the loss of a family member but your words of encouragements are definitely invaluable pillars of support during this time for which I am very grateful.

Moving forward, the 2nd Zonal Meeting is on this Friday for Rotaract Zone 3 Singapore at the Singapore Mgt University.Many thanks Prez. Joo Ee & RAC SMU for the kind assistance in letting us use your school facility and kind arrangements.

I have received feedback from several concerned clubs with regards to the proposed change of Zonal Meeting format suggested by DRC PP John Ng to emulate the Rotary Joint Presidents' Meetings in my earlier email. Please be assured that I value every feedback and I have addressed your concerns to DRC John Ng & DRR Lina Chin for assistance/advice in my formal capacity as Zonal Representative for Zone 3 S'pore. DRC John will be addressing this change in details this Friday.

1st Rotaract Match Day Outing - NBL match!

In order to promote a Healthier Lifestyle among Rotaractors. The Rotaract Clubs in Singapore had came out with regular Sports outings and project.

Like the Saturday Night Bowling by Rac NW, Saturday Morning Jog by Rac QT and SW.

And Rac RP took a further step by having a sports theme Installation "Rota'lympic"

Now The Dist Marcom Team will be organising Rotaract Match Day Outing, aiming to promote interests in different sports. And to support our local team and sportsmans.

Our 1st Rotaract Match Day Outing will be a NBL Basketball Match clash between Our very own Singapore Slingers vs Gold Coast Blaze.

The Singapore Slingers is the One and Only professional basketball team based in Singapore and licensed to play in the National Basketball League (NBL). The Team comprises of an international line-up including Austalians, Singaporeans, Americans, and New Zealanders.

Date: 26th Sept (Wed)

Time: 7 pm gather, 7.30pm tip off.

Rotaractors seek aid for flood victims in North Korea

Several Illinois Rotaract clubs are raising money to provide medical assistance for flood victims in North Korea. Working with Rotarians in Shanghai, China, as well as the Red Cross, and other groups, the Rotaractors hope to raise US$10,000 to send medical supplies to this non-Rotary country.

Current relief efforts have not kept up with the demand for antibiotics, food, medical supplies, and other essential humanitarian items. Heavy monsoon rain storms began sweeping the country on 5 August, and continued until 17 August. The rain submerged more than 11 percent of the nation's rice and maize fields as well as part of Pyongyang, the nation's capital. According an estimate by the United Nations, more than 200 people died and more than 300,000 have been displaced from their homes.

The Rotaractors hope to raise the money needed in the next month, calling the fundraiser "Operation Flood Relief Now." The deadline to donate to this project is 15 October 2007.
