RI D3310 Rotaract District Assembly 2011/12 Report

The Rotaract District Assembly 2011/12 kicked start with the warmth welcoming of the arrival of Guest of Honour, District Governor Haji Zainie and the First Lady Kamilah accompanied by DRC Derek Cheah, DDRC Koh Juay Meng, Outgoing DRR Chun Keong, Incoming DRR Sorensen and District Committee. The program started with the national anthems of Singapore and Malaysia, followed by toasting. The emcee, Rtr Nureen, welcomed everyone to this year’s assembly and did a roll call to all clubs that were present. We had 2 Ambassadorial scholars, 14 Rotarians from 9 Rotary Clubs and 90 Rotaractors from 15 Rotaract Clubs within District 3310. This had marked the best attendance by Rotarians and Rotaractors for the last several years.

The exciting day continued with the opening speech by Organizing Chairperson ZR Wahid, thanking his committee and Rotaract Club of Ngee Ann Polytechnic for taking up the challenge to organize this year’s assembly with only 29 days of preparations.  He also thanked DRC Derek for the support and both incoming and outgoing DRRs for their guidance.

DRC Derek was invited to be on stage for his speech. He voiced out that Rotaract is a program under rotary and Rotaract should be responsible for their club accounts, especially the clubs that were registered with Registry of Societies (ROS). He also urged Rotaractors to have more fellowship as he remembered his great time when he was the DRR.

Outgoing DRR Chun Keong was next on stage to give his last DRR speech before handling the regalia. He thanked everyone who had supported him during his term as DRR. He commented that it was not an easy task to be a DRR but had great time working together with Rotaractors in District 3310 and also congratulated DRR Sorensen for taking up the challenge for 2011-2012. The program continues with DRR Chun Keong invited DRC Derek to present the District Awards to Rotaract Clubs that were present.

The award-winning clubs and categories are as below:

The highlight of the day was the installation of DRR 2011/2012. DRR Chun Keong invited incoming DRR Sorensen to be on stage and installed her by passing the DRR regalia. DRR Sorensen then took stage with her first DRR speech and urged Rotaractors to reach out to other clubs whether it is in the zone, district or internationally, and emphasized that Rotaract is an international program and we are not alone.  This followed by the installation of the district board for 2011/2012.

Guest of Honour, District Governor Haji Zainie was next on stage. Despite his busy schedule of five different events on that day, he started with Rotaract. He noted that he has put emphasis on youth program under rotary during his term as District Governor and had allocated extra funds for youth programs.

It was then DRR Sorensen once again gave her report on New Orleans Pre-convention and Rotary convention. She showed various photos that were taken at New Orleans and the convention was a revelation for Rotaract. She exchanges information with Rotaractors who were present and were interested to have joint projects.

The opening ceremony ended with a quick introduction of Presidents to District Governor, thereafter a gathering to interact and mingle with DG Zainie.

The afternoon session started with skype session with PDRR Mitty Cheng from RAC Greater Vermont, USA, talking briefly on membership recruitment and retention. Questions like why do we join Rotaract were asked, and one members answered that he joined because he wanted to give back to the community. PDRR Mitty shares that we should ask ourselves two main question which are “why Rotaract” and “why join Rotaract”. At all times, fellowship were the main reason that attracted members to attend, however, this should not be the main event of Rotaract. He commends that Rotaractors should know the facts of Rotaract and Rotary. He also shared that when we talk about Rotaract, we need to show enthusiasm in order to attract potential members.

Next on stage was Rtn. Sirish from Rotary Club of Singapore, who introduced RYSEC, a social entrepreneur program in its third year running, encouraging Rotaractors to take part in this exciting challenge.

The day continued with the break-up sessions for each office bearers. The sessions were conducted as followed:

The break-up sessions finished with tea break before the closing ceremony. Once again, DRR Sorensen took stage and thanked everyone for attending the assembly. She also thanked all the trainers who took their time off to train all the participants. DRR Sorensen also reported on the first Rotaract council, which happened during the pre-convention in New Orleans. Out of the 15 resolution that was debate at the Rotaract council, the participants passed 7 resolutions.  

The assembly ended with photo sessions and fellowships.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF DRR 2010/2011

As DRR Michael is away on biz, it is my pleasure to announce that the DRR for 2010-2011 is - ZR Toh Chun Keong of RAC Singapore East.

CK (as he is affectionately called) is the current ZR for Singapore (Zone 3) and his primary motivation & objective in taking on this office is to try to rectify the lethargy and lack of interest in Rotaract in the district (especially in the community-based clubs). His vision is to make Rotaract interesting, meaningful & useful to Rotaractors in D3310 - to revive Rotaract to the good old days when Rotaract events like Dist Assemblies, Dist Conferences were "sold out" events months ahead. When Zonal Meetings were always full house and "standing room only" and Rotaract events saw entire clubs turning up !!!

Please join me in congratulating CK for his leadership, courage, passion & belief in Rotaract. Let's give him our fullest support. DRR 10/11 Nominations are open!

Dear fellow Rotaractors of District 3310,

I am pleased to announce that the nominations for DRR10/11 are open. I would like to invite Rotaractors who are interested to serve the District on a higher level to apply.

Below is the list of criteria required for the positionof DRRE, with reference to the past nominations and election of DRRE, as listed in the MOP. Kindly read through and understand the requirements before applying.

I hope that clubs will take care in choosing the nominees and vote wisely once it is open.

1. DRRE election time-line :

Closing Date for nominations - 15th Feb 2010

(Kindly email form, nomination AND supporting letter to drr3310@gmail.com )
- Forms can be obtained through your Zonal Representatives

- Circulation of eligible CVs to all Presidents/Secretaries for voting by all clubs

In the event of a walk-over due to only one nomination,there will be no balloting.

2. Selection of DRR-elect through Ballot-by-Mail Procedure
ONE vote per club. Members of the club have to unanimously agree on the same candidate.

3. Qualifications and criteria of DRR-Elect

* Must have served 1 full term as club president of a Rotaract club (to have some proven experience running a club). This does not include District Board membership as a qualifying criteria since running a project or some projects is different from running a club.

* Be a member in a functioning club in good standing that has no outstanding indebtedness to District.

* Be younger than 29 years old as of 1st July, sothat he/she is not older than 30 years old when taking over as DRR and therefore can serve as IPDRR no later than age 31.

* Should have been nominated by his/her home club (as a sign of support) as well as other club from another zone (to get support from the other parts of the district).

* Demonstrate willingness, commitment, and ability to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the office of DRR.

* Must demonstrate knowledge of the qualifications, duties,and responsibilities of DRR.

4. Attributes of DRR- Elect
A DRR, at the time of taking office, must have completed 2 years of membership in one or more clubs and have actively attended the District Rotaract Assemblies and Conferences. DRR also should:

* Possess the esteem and confidence of his/her own club.

* Be a high business or professional standing, with executive ability demonstrated in the conduct of their businesses and professions.

* Have their business or professional work well organized that they can give the time necessary to carry out Rotaract work.

* Have a thorough knowledge of Rotaract, its purposes, object,and constitutional documents.

* Be able to discuss any phase of Rotaract in a convincing manner and convey information articulately.

5. Duties of DRRE during the year preceding taking office as DRR

* Be given specific responsibilities by the DRR in connectionwith district committees or district organisation.

* Be invited by DRR to attend as an observer all district meetings.

* Be considered by DRR for assignment to participate inthe program of the district conference and assembly.

FOUNDATION OF ROTARY CLUBS IN SINGAPORE FLAG DAY

ROTARACTORS NEEDED FOR FOUNDATION OF ROTARY CLUBS IN SINGAPORE FLAG DAY

Date: Sat 27^th March 2010

Volunteers needed: a few hundred volunteers

Target: to raise $100K

The Foundation of Rotary Clubs (S) Ltd has been allocated a Flag Day by the National Council of Social Services on Saturday, 27^th March 2010.

This is only the third time for the Foundation to raise funds through a Flag Day. They hope to raise $100,000 to defray the expenses incurred by the community projects under the Foundation of Rotary Clubs (S) Ltd - the Rotary Family Service Centre and Ayer Rajah Students’ Care Centre. Annually, the Foundation incurs almost a million dollars for these community projects. Despite government subsidy, we rely heavily on public donations to keep on doing the good work.

All Rotaractors in Singapore (both tertiary & community-based) are strongly urged to render your support and assistance in this Flag Day – as a “Family of Rotary”.

Advanced RYLA

Advanced RYLA (A-RYLA) is a "proto-type". At the moment, there is a group in the States that is experimenting a similar program.

A-RYLA is program by youth for youth. Unlike RYLA where Rotarians organised everything, including conducting course content, A-RYLA encourages graduates of past RYLAs to organise and facilitate sessions as follow up to their breakthroughs from previous RYLA Camps.

In other words, A-RYLA is about them (the youth), with them organising program they want for themselves. Rotarians act only as mentors and resource facilitators.

APRRC 2009

Several Rotary Clubs have informed me that they will be sponsoring their Rotaractors for APRRC 2009 (22-25 Nov 2009).

I wish to remind all Rotaract Clubs which are getting this sponsorship from their Rotary Clubs for this Rotaract mega event that they are required to utilise the full sum of the sponsorship /subsidy strictly for this APRRC 2009 conference only. No portion from this sponsorship/subsidy is to kept by the club or channeled for other purposes.

Based on the input from various Rotaractors, the organizing committee has decided to create a special “TRANSFERABLE DAY PASS” which can be used without restriction by any Rotaractor from the same club throughout the event.

This Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference is indeed a rare and wonderful opportunity for Rotaractors in our district to experience the truly international aspect of Rotaract - beyond their club or even district level.

To date, more than 400 Rotaractors have registered from over 20 countries including Australia, China, France, Germany, Guam, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, UAE & the USA.

The organizing committee has been working very hard to bring this prestigious Rotaract mega event since they won the right to host this conference in Singapore when they bidded for it in Bali last year.

The theme for this 3-Day Conference is LEARN,GROW,SERVE and special emphasis has been placed on the exciting mix of international fellowship, community service and professional development with ample opportunities for socializing and making new friends. As they say in Rotaract – ”There are no strangers in Rotaract, only friends whom you have not met !!!”

This APRRC 2009 is the biggest Rotaract event to happen in our district in many years. The last one was when PDRR Yeo Swan Chin organized the Rotaract Pre-Convention during the RI Rotary Convention in Singapore in the 1990’s…

The next “big one” may not come again for a quite some time yet.

Celebrate vocational service in October

Throughout October, Vocational Service Month, Interactors, Rotaractors, and RYLA participants are encouraged to initiate vocational service activities. Vocational service entails promoting the highest ethical standards in all occupations, recognizing the worthiness of all useful occupations, and contributing your vocational talents to meeting your community's needs.

During this month, consider performing one or more of the following activities:

• Present on vocational service at your next Interact or Rotaract club meeting.
• Recognize someone in the community who exemplifies outstanding professional achievement while maintaining high ethical standards.
• Hold a career fair or vocational training workshop during your next RYLA event, and invite local professionals to give presentations on their career paths.
• Develop a mentoring program between Rotarians and youth program participants.

Celebrate World Interact Week, 2-8 November

Join Interactors around the world 2-8 November to celebrate World Interact Week 2009. Every year, Interact clubs and their sponsor Rotary clubs are encouraged to celebrate the founding of the first Interact club on 5 November 1962 by participating in joint projects.

Get recognition for your club's activities by submitting the World Interact Week Celebration Recognition Entry Form to RI by 15 December.

Register for Rotary-UN Day

On 7 November, about 1,500 people, including Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, and United Nations leaders, will attend Rotary-UN Day in New York City.

Organized by RI representatives to the UN, the day will feature panel discussions on water, literacy, health, and youth. Speakers from the United Nations, Rotary, and other nongovernmental organizations will discuss humanitarian programs and provide insight into the more than 60-year relationship between Rotary and the UN.

The program will also include a youth panel featuring a speaker from Interact and Rotaract, who will each present a 10-minute description of a hands-on international club project.

Rotary International is teaming up with violin virtuoso and polio survivor Itzhak Perlman and the world-renowned New York Philharmonic to present the Concert to End Polio, a benefit performance supporting the global effort to eradicate this disabling, sometimes fatal, childhood disease.

September is New Generations Month

A good time to renew, reinforce & rejoice the relationship with your sponsoring Rotary club.

Attend their club meeting and do a short presentation on your recent projects and Year Plan perhaps would be a great idea. Join their project (if any). Go bowling or a game of golf with your Rotarians. Invite your Rotarians to your club meeting or event. Organise a BBQ for socializing and fellowship with your Rotarians.

For those who attended the Rotaract District Assembly, have you submitted your Year Plan and Budget to your sponsoring Rotary Club yet? This would be an opportune time to do so.

It is time to evolve in the upcoming Advance RYLA on 25, 26 and 27 September 2009 at ITE College East, 10 Simei Avenue, Singapore. This event is organised by Interect Club of ITE College East, Singapore and supported by Rotary E-Club of 3310 and Rotary Club of Johor Centennial.

If you have attended at least one RYLA camp previously, and are aged between 16 and 30, you may apply to this youth programme. RDA 2009/2010- Zone 1&3
